Appreciation - Towards creativity through real enjoyment

It was another Wednesday on the 17th of October, 2018. We all went into the Vidya Jyothi Prof. V.K. Samaranayake Auditorium as the Enhancement lecture was about to begin. We were excitedly awaiting the arrival of a famous character of the country. Emeritus Mr. Jayalal Rohana was the guest lecturer for the day. A well-known character in the broadcasting industry. The Topic for the day, "Towards creativity through real enjoyment", was based around appreciation. His charismatic personality was more than adequate to provide us with a good knowledge on the relevant topic of the day. He started getting into the topic step by step by including a lot of humor and life stories of his, and this made the audience get involved in the lecture rather than other lectures. The base of the lecture was well set with diverse stories he came up with and even though it was humor, there was a deep learning in all of them if you look back for a moment.

Music is a universal language that speaks to any soul. Appreciation, creativity and enjoyment, all have something in common and that is music. To get a good understanding on creativity, music can be used. Emeritus Mr. Jayalal Rohana used music as the source to explain the meaning of true appreciation. The music of the golden old of Sri Lanka is a perfect example to grasp the meaning of appreciation. Unlike the present, music of the past in any country used true and real sounds to incorporate into songs. This made a song rich and powerful. The true and real sound of one instrument can out-perform a thousand of artificial effects put together. Our guest lecturer explained the clear difference using different versions of the same music as heard on old days and music of the present. As we listened, we realized that the difference between the two is quite distant, and that the music from the past carried a sense of great richness and quality in them. Which can be really enjoyed and appreciated as great work pieces.

There are various types of music like pop, rock, classical, country, jazz etc. Whichever the music category they have an aspect to be appreciated and that quality should be identified by anyone who listens to it. That makes him/her enjoy music. Life is simply the same scenario. One should be able to identify the qualities of anything he/she encounter and appreciate and enjoy them. It could be work, family, art, studies and simply everything in life. This helps in being creative and innovative towards doing something. Having a free and open mind is the main reason for this. Our guest lecturer used many examples from his life to convey this idea to us.

The lecture in summary, was very good as our guest lecture, Emeritus Mr. Jayalal Rohana clearly is a great spokesman and a great actor to perform on a stage. The lecture was flawless, simple yet very powerful. Finally, he put on the National Anthem and we all stood and respected our country. The message he gave from this is respect your nation and appreciate what you are and what you can be. I would like to thank Emeritus Mr. Jayalal Rohana for attending this lecture and conducting this wonderful lecture that would have inspired and moved almost every present that day to think and act differently.

"Respect your nation, nationality. Live life and appreciate what's around you"
