Team building activities to Improve Motivation
The
topic of the day was ‘Team building
activities to improve Motivation’. The guest lecturer/spokesman invited was
perfect to deliver the lecture as his reputation precedes with honor, respect
and courage.
Let
me set an abstract before we go into the topic.
Sri
Lanka being a victim of war for a period of 30 long years. The words war,
violence and death are not new for the locals. The hardships, countless losses,
sacrifices of the soldiers made it possible for Sri Lanka to end the war and
get back up again as a free nation. So, a war hero can be identified as a
pillar of success in real life. The guest lecturer for the day, Lieutenant Commander Kamila Perera is a
such hero that survived through many attacks against the LTTE and lived to tell
the tale. The vast experience he carries was well utilized by him during the
lecture.
Team
building is a key aspect in a military force to ensure a mission is carried out
as planned. The tactics, practices, precision are all well trained into
soldiers. Working in a team is very important when it comes to complex tasks. In
a team there is a leader and the sub-ordinates who follow the leader. First, we
need to look at how a team function. The main point of structure is the team
leader. The trust built among the team and the syncing between team members is
key in achieving a common goal inside a team. The skills that are required in a
team member are,
- Listening skills
- Anticipation
- Evaluate a situation and act accordingly
- Quick and efficient decision making
- Strategy management
- Adaptability
A
good leader always comes up with the best solutions in any situation the team
is in. Our guest lecturer explained many of his life experiences as a boy and
how he grew up to be the man he is today. The words really inspired us to do
more, and to be more. Team building is a routine of developing the above-mentioned
skills thoroughly to fit into the requirements of the team and the goal. These
activities in turn will improve a person’s thinking ability and self-confidence.
Motivation is mainly based on confidence. So, team building activities can be a
factor to motivation.
Another
strong determinant of a team is belief. This keeps a team motivated towards
achieving the objectives of the team. Lieutenant Commander Kamila Perera used the
subject ‘Mother’ to explain this factor. Family is a strong belief of any
person, and mother is the core of a family. Belief of family can greatly
influence a person in believing. This is also true in a war environment as
well. Activities that surrounds family can keep a person going and believing
during a war. This provides great motivation to a person. Because of structural
changes in social order, a workplace is more fluid and adaptive. As a result,
individuals lose their sense of stability and security, which can be provided
by a membership in a group. This is known as self-management.
