Life Experience for Young Talent - Mr. Nisshanka Diddeniya

Music is the most powerful universal language in the world that can speak to emotions, feelings, moods of any person. Drama is also a similar field which is spread widely throughout the world. Combining these forces together ultimately creates a very powerful tool to the society. Talent and experience are key components in these areas. One aspect alone cannot exist for a person to get recognized. Hence, for young talent a proper guidance is essential to direct to the correct path. This is why the day’s topic is “Life experience for young talent”. Life experience can be used as a good guidance factor for rising talent in the world.

First let me introduce our guest lecturer. Most of the people in the country know this name when it comes to music and drama. He is Mr. Nisshanka Diddeniya. An experienced person who is widely talented in both the fields. As young talents are key to a country’s future well-being, being aware of where you can go wrong and how to build up from mistakes are important. Having him in our lecture for the enhancement course brought us a lot of experience into our lives. Let us move to the core of the lecture as I understood from his words.

This was a not a normal lecture that we encounter every day. As I told, music and drama were key throughout the lecture. Mr. Nisshanka Diddeniya brought along some help from his field to support him to continue the lecture. Along with them appeared some fine music equipment before us including a keyboard, tabla and a multi pad. This combination created a whole new experience for us witnessing live music in a lecture session. So, the lecture started in a new environment. He started off from the very beginning of his life where he was an innocent boy living in the midst of great legends of the current music and drama culture. One such character is deceased Mr. Ediriweera Sarathchandra. Mr. Nisshanka Diddeniya used his character in many occasions to describe his memorable moments of his career. The famous stage drama of Sri Lanka, ‘Sinhabahu’ has a big history revolving around it. Our guest lecturer was lucky enough to be a part of this beautiful background story as the actor for the lion in ‘Sinhabahu’ at the time of Mr. Ediriweera Sarathchandra. He also portrayed the King of the Veddas in ‘Maname’. For some time, he has also portrayed as ‘Prince Maname’. His role as ‘Elapatha Mudali’ in ‘Gajaman Puwatha’ is unforgettable, along with ‘Pemato Jayathi Soko’, his very first stage drama. He was also the person who introduced the ‘Nurti’ tradition to the stage. In addition to this he showcased a number of music tracks as well. By this anyone should understand Mr. Diddeniya is a legend on his own rights to the drama and music culture of Sri Lanka.

He went through many life experiences and many hardships he faced those days as a rather poor boy and came to be the person that he is today. These experiences he shared with us shed a light on how society is and how to handle tough situations in life. “All art hides a painful backstory”, one can say, and this in a sense is true. The sweet and leisurely moments in life are experienced by someone through real hard work and patience. The life of an artist is the best example for this. Mr. Diddeniya is nor different from this. As I understood there are certain things there should be in order to gain positive results out of a situation.

  • Sacrifice
  • Belief
  • Hard work
  • Patience
  • Skills and Talents
  • Experience

These aspects work together in achieving a goal, and all of them is required for it to be a success. Mr. Nisshanka Diddeniya’s life story reflects the above sentence.

In addition to all of the information we gained he also provided us with some great music pieces from different cultures of the country. This made the lecture even more valuable. The assistance provided by his supporters were fantastic, and even those two individuals who came along with Mr. Diddeniya are also young talents of the country.

This lecture can be interpreted as a journey through life rather than a lecture. With the end of the session we gained a lot of knowledge on culture, music, drama, society. This session is useful for young talent as a kick-starter for them to come out to the society and showcase their talents to the world. Hiding and avoiding won’t be of much help to a person, nor the society. Learn to be forward, straight-thinking and fearless. The final message I got from that lecture.
